Illegal wildlife trade

Poaching, illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking remain a major threat to snow leopards and their prey species across the cat’s range. To identify trends and help law enforcement agencies and conservationists in snow leopard combat illegal wildlife trade, the Global Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Protection Program, with support from the Snow Leopard Trust and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, has created a comprehensive range-wide database on poaching and illegal trade involving the snow leopard and related species through collaborations with organizations such as INTERPOL, Environmental Investigation Agency, Wildlife Protection Society of India and others.

The database will soon become accessible to partner organizations and law enforcement agencies.

Currently, the creation of algorithms to compile additional crime data for filling gaps is underway, and new networks to share information with all major stakeholders are being developed.
