Marwell Wildlife and Beijing Forestry University (BFU)’s Wildlife Institute, led by Dr Shi Kun, have formed a collaborative alliance to further develop their programme of work for the snow leopard started by Dr. Philip Riordan and Dr Shi in 2007. Through this alliance, the partners will undertake conservation and research activities to enhance the status of snow leopard in China and deliver benefits to local human communities. Specific activities being undertaken include monitoring snow leopard numbers and providing training and capacity building within key protected areas and wider engagement to understand the importance of areas outside of protection. Marwell Wildlife and BFU’s Wildlife Institute also work closely with the Chinese State Forestry Administration and provide evidence to support policy making at the highest level, such as the development of China’s National Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Plan (NSLEP).
